To teach students the properties of electromagnets.
The students will see how a coil can create an magnetic field and how
a magnet can induce a current in a coil.
Components:
battery
two compasses
one small coil
one large hollow coil
two LEDs ( one red, one green )
Fourth Grade CA Physical Science Standards met:
PHYSICAL SCIENCE 1c - Students
know electric currents produce magnetic fields and know how to build a simple
electromagnet.
PHYSICAL SCIENCE 1d - Students know the role of electromagnets
in the construction of electric motors, electric generators, and simple devices,
such as doorbells and earphones.
PHYSICAL SCIENCE 1f - Students know that magnets
have two poles (north and south) and that like poles repel each other while
unlike poles attract each other.
High School CA Physics Standards met:
PHYSICS 5f - Students know magnetic materials and
electric circuits (moving electric charges) are sources of magnetic fields
and are subject to forces arising from the magnetic fields of other sources.
PHYSICS 5g - Students know how to determine the direction
of a magnetic field produced by a current flowing in a straight wire or in
a coil.
PHYSICS 5h - Students know changing magnetic fields
produce electric fields, thereby inducing currents in nearby conductors.
