Introduction for engineers

Because the Terahertz frequency range is very poor in technology compared to lower and higher frequencies, one of our main goals is to lay a foundation on which to build new semiconductor devices to bridge the "Terahertz gap." Technologies which are particularly needed are

• New solid-state sources of THz radiation
• Ultra-sensitive direct detectors and mixers for THz radiation that do not require cooling to 4K or below.
• Materials and devices which can modulate interband radiation at THz frequencies, for use in optical communications systems.
